13/04/2020

There are lots of benefits to choosing a new-build home – higher energy efficiency, brand-new fittings, top-of-the-range onsite facilities, the list goes on. But the downside of this type of property is they are generally very bland and uniform, they are built to please the majority.

Personalising your new build house is much easier than you would think, we have put together some simple tips you can follow to help make your house a home.Have a say in the planning stage

If you are lucky enough to have chosen your house before construction is completed, most developers will allow you to have the final say over fixtures and fittings, things like choosing your own bathroom and kitchen mean on move in day the house already feels like yours.

Start on the inside and work your way out

If you have just moved into your home you’re going to make to make sure it feels homey. You need to make sure that your home is a place that reflects your personality and style. Here is a quick check list of things you can do.

  • Source interesting furniture, trawl antique stores and design stores
  • Install feature shelving
  • Hang all your photos and artwork
  • Be bold with colour when decorating
  • Use unique rugs in hallways and living room
  • Get creative with your lighting

Creative gardening

If you drive into any new build estate, you will notice that nearly every house looks the same. This is where some creative gardening comes in handy. You can plant a climbing rose near the base of your home that you can train up the wall. Or a tree with shallow roots that will grow over the years you live there.

Think about adding a statue, a bird feeder or pond and creative borders, you can really make your house stand out with plants and features!

Repaint

The easiest way to make your house stand out is to paint the outside. Be bold with the colour you choose but keep your neighbours in mind as they are the ones who are going to be looking at it!

Get eco

Most new builds are built with strict environmental requirements, but there is always more you can do. Being the most eco house on your block might not look much from the outside, but it will give you a warm fuzzy feeling every time you think about the good you’re doing. Consider getting light tunnels fitted during the building stage, install solar panels and water recycling systems. Even small things like a compost bin in your garden make a big difference!
